Our Origins

Black Spruce Coffee is owned and operated by Ricky Mawunganidze.

Two core memories stand out in my coffee journey. The first is from childhood, when I was served an incredibly strong cup of coffee at a friend’s house—so strong that no amount of sugar and milk could save it! The second is cherished moments with my baba, sitting in the garden at Rua de Tchamba in Maputo, sharing hopes and dreams over espresso

I’ve always been drawn to the rituals of coffee —the culture, the meaningful conversation, the connections, and the peaceful moments that happen over just a cup of good coffee.

With Black Spruce Coffee, my hope is to share in your stories, aspirations and quiet moments by offering carefully sourced, world-class Arabica beans, hand-roasted by me right here in the heart of the Klondike—Dawson City.

Rooted in community, through our Spruce Bough program we give back by donating 5lb of coffee for every 100lb sold to local groups that make this place stronger.

The Black Spruce is a hardy, iconic tree of the Boreal forest, often found on north-facing slopes across the Yukon. Like the tree, every batch of our coffee carries a story—resilient, rooted, and full of character.
